With the UK smashing through the 10 million jab milestone today (Wednesday), medic MP Andrew Murrison has expressed his delight at the success of the programme in protecting vulnerable groups and news that the Oxford-AstraZeneca jab reduces transmission.
Nine in 10 over 80s and over half of those in their 70s have now been jabbed. All eligible care homes with older residents in England (10,307 in total) has been visited and vaccinations offered.
Adding to the good news is the preliminary research finding from Oxford University, which shows the Oxford-AstraZeneca vaccine offers 76% effective protection from a single dose for up to 12 weeks.
Andrew commented:
“Despite the unhelpfulness of some EU players who should know better, the U.K.’s vaccine roll out has led the way in Europe. A huge well done to all involved.
“The findings of the Oxford study – pending peer review and publication in The Lancet – will be vitally important for policy makers. Assuming hospitalisations fall and transmission too, we should be able to open up the country soon. We definitely need to get schools up and running. I will certainly be pressing for an early release from lockdown as the vaccine takes effect. In the meantime, we should all individually be doing everything we possibly can to drive daily case rates down.”
