Andrew Murrison, MP for South West Wiltshire, has welcomed Prime Minister Rishi Sunak’s announcement of the Windsor Framework. The agreement delivers three major achievements. It effectively abolishes the border in the Irish Sea by creating a green lane for goods headed to Northern Ireland. It does away with 1700 pages of EU regulation, reducing the amount of EU law that applies to just 3%. Finally, it gives the Assembly of Northern Ireland a ‘Stormont Break’ so that the democratically elected representatives can block damaging regulations.
Northern Ireland is a topic of special interest and importance to Andrew, who served as the Minister of State for Northern Ireland under David Cameron and Chaired the Northern Ireland Affairs Select Committee from 2017 to 2019.
Andrew said, “The Windsor Framework is a hugely impressive achievement. Rishi Sunak’s hard work, mastery of detail and skilful diplomacy have yielded huge dividends. The sovereignty of Northern Ireland and its place in the UK have been assured.”
