Andrew Murrison is supporting a residents' referendum to be held on 23 May in the town hall aimed at capping the Trowbridge town council precept at 3%. He points out that its gone up 30% over past two years with no obvious improvement in services.
Under its current leadership, Trowbridge town council is the second most indebted parish in the country and, worryingly, its auditor reported this February that its reserves are now 'extremely low.' Andrew said;
"Trowbridge town council needs to focus on getting the basics right rather than spending its £2.6 million budget on pet projects and then demanding even more from those it's meant to be serving.
"Some of us have been working hard in difficult times to get more money into the town - such as through the successful Future High Streets Fund bid and the Tech Trowbridge initiative - but that's not helped by the town council turning the screws on hard-pressed residents."
The MP said;
"I've long been concerned at the town council's fiscal incontinence. Eventually it'll run out of other people's money and we'll be left with little to show for it."
